Urbackup crashing when backup goes 100%

Hi.

My urbackup installation is crashing when some backups goes 100%.

Sometimes I find urbackup down. I have been 3 days checking the logs, monitoring ram, cpu, etc. And nothing. I have also been reading the forum and the administrator manual, trying different configurations and nothing.

Today I stared at the web console and noticed that the server crashes when a backup goes 100%.

Linux urbuntu 3.2.0-55-generic-pae #85-Ubuntu SMP Wed Oct 2 14:03:15 UTC 2013 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

What else could I check?

I installed using a repo. I am affraid I may not know how to complie from the source or, if I try, I will lose the 500GB of backups I have already collected from my users. (This definitedly tells me that the server is not crashing on EVERY client)

Thanks for your help.

Can you post the last log messages before the log. If there is nothing relevant, can you switch the logging level to debug in /etc/default/urbackup (change “warn” to “debug”) and then post the last log messages?

Hi.

This is before the crash and after manually starting it.

I had “debug” configured a couple of days ago, posting is my last resort.

No problem. It shouldn’t crash, of course. I can’t see the issue, which means you’ll probably have to compile/debug https://urbackup.atlassian.net/wiki/display/US/Debugging+with+gdb+on+Linux . If you use the same or a more recent version (which version are you using anyway?), it’ll of course pick up existing backups.

Hi.

I am using v1.2.4

I moved the tmp folder to a bigger disk and restarted. Is it possible it could be the issue or would it be something else?

Also, I just found this crash report:

So is it totally safe to compile it over the actual installation?

Thanks.

Enrique

I don’t know. Did you enable the temporary file buffers in the advanced settings?

Yes, it’s safe and relatively easy on Linux.

No I didnt. I think I shouldnt since the storage is faster than the network.

Should I?

Hi again.

I compiled everything again using this: https://urbackup.atlassian.net/wiki/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=884738

WHen the server crashed, the log ended with

Enrique.

Thanks. Now I know the general area.

You are still using the precompiled version. Can you change

PREFIX=/usr

to

PREFIX=/usr/local

in
/usr/local/sbin/start_urbackup_server
? (Sorry, missed that part in the wiki page)

here we go.

If you update the wiki, please include how to get back to normal after finished debugging ;)

So this is a pretty tricky issue: The Linux version cannot have more than 1024 files and connections open at the same time and you seem to have hit this limit. How many clients do you have?
This required a rather large fix, so this fix is now in the 1.3 version. Nightlies of that are available here: http://urpc.dyndns.org/urbackup_unstable/ You get back to the packaged version by deleting the file /usr/local/sbin/start_urbackup_server .

Hi.

So, how do I limit the number of connections? Would any of the advanced settings help?

Ill compile the nighty

Thanks.

Enrique.

Hi.

I downloaded this package.

wget http://urpc.dyndns.org/urbackup_unstable/urbackup-server_1.3.0.381.orig.tar.gz

The compilation and installation went smooth, but when I run it it seems to still be running the 1.2.4 version. How do I force it? Or how I can tell which version is it running? The web interface logo says 1.2.4.

Thanks.

Well, even when it says 1.2.4 it seems to be version 1.3 running (the main files are from today, so I guess is the 1.3 version) and its great.

From 19 complete backup which wouldnt finish with previous version, 2 of them already finished.

Ill post when the whole page goes green.

THanks!

Hi.

After 2 weeks of everything going smoothly. the server started to crash again, and still there was like 5 clients with big files (not lots of storage, but big 3GB or more files) without full backup.

I updated to urbackup-server_1.3.0.402.orig.tar.gz and compiled again. Everything went great again, even one of the big clients completed a full backup.

But today the server crashed again.

Heres the gdb error log:

Looks like it ran out of memory. Did it say:

terminate called after throwing an instance of 'std::bad_alloc'
  what():  std::bad_alloc

?

I looked at the first page and I see that you are using a x86 system. With many clients UrBackup uses a lot of threads which use a lot of virtual memory which is problematic with x86. I’ve reduced the number of active threads in the most recent version (currently testing it with 1000 clients).
You can try reducing the thread stack size by adding e.g.

ulimit -s 1024

to /usr/local/sbin/start_urbackup_server (limits the stack size to 1MB)

You could also lower the “Update stats database cachesize” in the advanced settings (Default is quite high: 300MB). It crashed while updating the stats…
If there is a certain workload/constellation which causes memory leaks I would be interested in that.

Hi, during the weekend it terminated with this

Program received signal SIGHUP, Hangup.

Should I add it to the end of the file or replace
ulimit -n 10000

Add it directly behind the other ulimit call.
I’ve also added the adjustment to the most recent build.
