System error code: 381

Since a couple of days I cant backup my client machines successfully anymore.

I’ve got a vague feeling it may be related to an event when I tried the offline cache for “OneDrive for business”. I enabled some of its off-line function to later deactivate them again, after that I get this error when it encounters the place for the files involved.

Any thought or suggestions whats happening here?

Weird Windows doesn’t even have this error code ( https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/ms681382(v=vs.85).aspx ). Idk what is going on… must be some driver that returns a unknown error.

“Save space and download files as you use them”. This setting enabled breaks the backup and generates the Error. This is a rather new setting i OneDrive which keeps files offline in some kind of smart way.
Disabling this options makes backup go through without errors.

Also found an article about this, haven’t tested the tips there with unlink and linking. I’ll get back on the effect for that action.
https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/onedrive/forum/odwork-odfiles-sdwin10/win-10-backup-error-message-skipped-files/46e9874a-ca7a-4766-b29e-c06c7082d544?auth=1

My guess it it adds a onedrive driver to the system and saves the files as proprietary reparse points. Those can then not be read from other users (You could try running the UrBackupClientBackend service as your normal user) or it cannot handle snapshots/shadow copies.

So don’t enable that option or exclude the folder. Now that those files exist you probably need to reinstall OneDrive to get rid of them as explained in the link.

You’re spot on it looks.

Search a bit more and found that other backup solutions also encounter problem with the new OneDrive implementation.

If I read the content of this link correctly, it looks like they do some kind of override and treat the folders as normal folders.

Best reg.
