SQL writer vs Volume backup

I have an MS SQL server and I can choose to backup the databases through the SqlWriter component. This comes out to be about 220GB

However, the databases are stored on dedicated E: and F: partitions. Backing up these volumes using the image backup results in a size of 4GB.

Also it seems the incremental backup size of these databases using the SqlWriter component are just as large as the full backup.

So uhhh what gives? This by design? Should I just stick to volume backup? The only difference I can think of us that the volume backup will be more difficult to restore. But I’m not sure thats worth the drive space.
