Please help me with POC to restore image in Vmware

Hi,

I’ve done a backup of a windows server 2012 with an image.

I’m trying to restore the image in vmware guest host.

To do that, I uncompress the image (sysvol and C: partition) and convert to vmdk. Then when I boot in my virtual guest it says me “Missing operating system”.

Do you know if I do the best method to restore the images?.

Use same as bare-metal, Bootable USB stick to restore image backups, for VM, boot the iso within the guest.

sonic9’s suggestion is the right one: boot the UrBackup restore ISO inside the VM and restore from the server, just like a physical machine.

The reason converting the images didn’t work is that UrBackup backs up each partition as a separate image (C: and the system reserved partition), and saves the disk’s partition table and boot code separately. Converting the C: image to a VMDK gives a disk with the partition’s contents but no partition table or boot sector, hence “Missing operating system”. The restore ISO recreates the partition layout and writes both partitions back.
