NTFS and max hard Links

Dear Urbackup Support Team,

if i have the max hard links message (and i have it),
will the next backups be good or not?

Simply will i have a not size optimized backup or an inconsistent archive?

i’m using actual urbackup version (2.1.19 - 2.1.16)

Thanks
Stefano

As i remember from the doc it will just not be size optimized.
On windows , every10 hard link it will start linking to a new file copy

Orogor,
thank you for this information but, in this case, all next backups are usable or not?

Stefano

Hello

Maybe i am not thinking about the same message, so really the best thing is to try to restore a file.
Don’t hesitate to try multiple restore with various files, size, permissions, weird cases, filenames, and post on the forum if you get an issue.
File restores should always work.

Hi Stefano,
My understanding is once NTFS has 1023 hard links to a file it creates a new copy of the file and starts creating hard links to that. If you have 4000 links to the file NTFS will create 4 copies of the file.
To answer your question the backup will be good.
The only issue is the backup will take more space.

Keep in mind that NTFS slows when the MFT gets big (lots of files on drive). You can format the drive to prevent multiple MFTs.

Thank you all
