NFS Storage Recommendation

Been running URBackup for a few years now and love it. I’ve been using NFS as my backing storage for quite some time. The TrueNAS Scale machine that is housing the NFS share had an issue and rebooted last night. Backups appear fine, but it made me think. Should I be using a hard mount or a soft mount for my NFS? Trying to weigh the options here and looking for some input.

After years of trying to use a NFS share, i gave up mainly due to performance issues. If you are running truenas scale you can install urbackup server as a docker image on your truenas scale server and eliminate the need for a NFS share.

Irrespective of any performance issues, which I’m not in a position to agree, or disagree with, IMHO, You want hard mounts. Soft mounts may cause data loss in the event the NFS server goes away. Hard mounts will cause the client to effectively lock up, upon failure of the NFS server.
