New server can't see old backups because wrong file owner

Hi,

My server crashed, but backup folder was on external disk. I installed a new server and gave it the external disk as backup location, but it doesn’t see the old backups.

The clients rejected the server, but so far I re-activated one client, but removing its server_idents.txt and giving it a 5min break to restart. At this moment it’s happily indexing

But still the server won’t show the old backups for that client. I suppose because there was another problem after I reinstalled the server: file ownership of the urbackup directory on the external disk was incorrect. ls -l listed numbers i.o. usernames. I succeeded to chown the urbackup directory and the config files in it and also the top-level subdirectories where actual backups are stored, but when I try to chown the backup files themselves (as root), I get “read only filesystem”.

This is how the disk is mounted (fstab): /dev/sdd1 /media/backup btrfs defaults, noatime 0 1 or (mount): /dev/sdd1 on /media/backup type btrfs (rw,noatime,space_cache,subvolid=5,subvol=/).

It doesn’t matter to me if I loose the old backups, but I’m worried now that they sit on the disk, eating space and being useless…

So my question: will urbackup clean up these files sooner or later? Can I just remove them (if I can at all, regarding the “read only filesystem” error that I get on chown)? Or have I messed up completely and should I better wipe the disk completely and start from scratch?

Here are the last lines from ls -ltr in the backup directory for the client that’s now indexing:
