Mlocate on ubuntu

I noticed that on my ubuntu xenial 16.04 server that the folder /var/lib/mlocate occasionally gets very large and sometimes fills up the server. It’s apparently a cron job that runs. Is this needed by urbackup? Thanks.

Hi

That s the database that allow the locate commands to return results very fast
If it s that large it actually fills you drive, you better add some exclusion to /etc/updatedb.conf, maybe you try to index mails or squid proxy files (i guess it s a folder with a lot of small files).

You don’t need to backup this foler, so better add it to your urbackupe xclusion

thanks, this is actually on the UrBackup server that it is filling up, I’d imagine it has to do with all the backup files. I was just wondering if I disabled it and didn’t use “locate” that it would cause any problems with UrBackup, I’d imagine not.

if you try to index urbackup data with locate , i guesss that won t do it.
Better to look up the doc for locate and ignore the path.

Thanks, you just have to edit this file… /etc/updatedb.conf. … and add to PRUNEPATHS whatever you want to exclude

PRUNEPATHS="/tmp /var/spool /media /backups"
