Hi !
I am running UrBackup on a normal ext4 storage and have LAN-clients and internet-clients.
LAN-clients show the following behavior:
Full-backups are big and the incremental backups are significantly smaller.
This is how I expect it to be.
Internet-clients behave differently:
Full-backups are big and the incremental backups are a bit bigger than the full backup.
It seems they are the full backup plus the incremental size.
This fills up the storage extremely fast.
This behavior is only seen when the backup is run over internet.
I think there’s something wrong with my settings ?
Can anyone help me on how to configure the internet-client to show the same behavior as the LAN-client ?
Internet-clients shall be allowed to run full-backups.
I have configured this, but I am out of ideas on how to get the incremental backup (size) to behave like the LAN-client.
Are these file backups or image backups? The cause would be different, so that’s the first thing to pin down. Please also say where you read the sizes (Backups page, Statistics) and give a pair of example numbers.
For image backups, internet clients have their own settings on the Internet tab: “Incremental image backup style” and “Full image backup style”. By default an internet full is “synthetic”, which means it is transferred like an incremental but the server still writes a complete image, so fulls are always full size. Incrementals are based on the last image backup. In the server log of one of those big incrementals, look for “Basing image backup on …” and especially for “Error retrieving last image backup. Doing full image backup instead.” If that second line is there, the server couldn’t find the previous image and quietly made a full one.
For file backups, unchanged files are only hard links on ext4, so they take no extra space. The log of an incremental ends with “Transferred X - Average speed …”. If X is about the size of the whole backup for the internet clients, the files are being transferred again instead of linked, and the next question is which files those are.
Sorry, I totally forgot to mention that.
I am talking about file-backups.
sorry for inconvenience.
the logs always tell me it’s doing an incremental backup.
What irritates me is that only the internet clients backups behave and show sizes like this.
LAN-clients do not behave tis way - incremental backups show much smaller sizes here.
