I need to create full-image backups of Linux that can be restored without issues

Could someone please help me with the following?

I use UrBackup as the primary backup server for my infrastructure. I need to back up Linux operating systems, and I would like the process to work just as it does with Windows—where creating full or incremental images and restoring them works seamlessly. I need the same functionality for Linux: the ability to create a full image backup of the OS and restore it without issues. I have run several tests, but it hasn’t worked so far; if anyone has a manual or a step-by-step guide on how to set this up correctly, I would greatly appreciate it.

Linux image backups work, but the setup is different from Windows, and it depends on what you picked when installing the client.

The installer asks for a snapshot mechanism. Only two of them support image backups: dattobd and “Linux device mapper based snapshots”. With LVM, btrfs or no snapshots you only get file backups.

For the device mapper one, answer yes to converting the root device on boot and reboot afterwards, otherwise the root filesystem can’t be snapshotted. That part needs initramfs-tools, so Debian/Ubuntu. The filesystem has to be ext4 or xfs, and partclone should be installed.

Restore is also different. It is started from a running Linux system on the target machine, which gets moved into RAM while the image is written to the disk, so it needs a few GB of memory.

Which distro and filesystem are you using, which snapshot option did you choose, and does it fail at the backup or at the restore? The client log line with the error would help.
