File restore possibilities

Hi,

I am testing urBackup on Windows 2008 r2 and Windows 7 clients. I am pleasantly surprised of urBackup’s possibilities.
But what is unclear to me is how to restore files from earlier File backups? I cannot find this in your documentation.

It would be interesting to know:

  1. can the admin restore backupped files to a specific client from the central web interface?

  2. can the user restore files via the agent? From Explorer? To original location (real restore)?

  3. can the user restore files via explorer somehow? (HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AllFilesystemObjects\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers)

And for a second question: What is the main difference for Internet connection? Only changed block? Isn’t that what you always want?
Don’t you use VSS with NTFS?

Can the backup storage deduplicate during the night to save space?

Thanks for your time. Keep up the good work.

Cheers

One advantage of UrBackup is, that the directory structure on the server basically replicates the directory strucutre on the client during each backup (via hard links). You can then use any tool that allows file access to restore files. E.g. samba or AJAXPlorer.

So, while 1-3 would be possible it’s currently not implemented.

Internet mode reverses the connection and encrypts and compresses the transferred data. With 1.2. you can enable the “changed blocks only” transfer mode for files for LAN as well. VSS doesn’t allow one to access which blocks have changed.

UrBackup only does file level deduplication (+block difference on btrfs). This deduplication is already maxxed, and it wouldn’t be able to save more space. I hope offline dedup goes into btrfs at some point :).
