I am new to UrBackup and wonder, if the image backup Option also backs up program files installed on the device?
I got confused by the redundant settings in the software. So when you install the client, it says it is recommended to not backup program data, but it also stats to backup drive „C“ and there is no exclusion to be defined/ deleted.
I run the image backup and it said 42GB were transferred, but the C-Drive is like 60GB filled.
Not sure if I understand your question correctly, but…
When you do an image backup, it is literally like cloning the disk(s) the client computer has [that are selected for backup] so if you restore it, then the stuff on the disk(s) would be exactly the same as at the time of the selected restore point…
For example, let’s just work with a client that only has a C: drive and no additional drives…and you have backup images taken on a nightly basis for the last month…
You find that the client crashed/failed and you need to go back to Wednesday night’s backup, when you have restored the image, it will be just as it was when that (Wednesday) nightly backup was taken…
Should you realise that there was actually something installed on Wednesday that caused it to break, you can restore and go back to Tuesday night’s backup…and there will be no trace of whatever was done on the Wednesday…
Does that answer your question…?
Obvs, just make sure you test the backup/s to confirm that restoring works as you need it to - don’t just rely on the backup completing as being fine…and that is especially true if you have multiple drives in the client…
So it’s basically cloning the disc with all its data (atleast under the assumption that all necessary partition letters are specified). I assume that named exclusions/ inclusions only effect the file backup then.
The incremental backup also worked just fine for me, I just get confused by the „base/first“ image backup only transferring 42gb of data, while the data on the drive itself uses 60gb of capacity. Initially I thought that it might be cause of compression going on in the transfer, but the server says that the image takes only 23gb in space. So that would be like double compressed and this doesn’t make much sense.
Therefore I best guess would be that some files got truncated or excluded from the backup in the first place, thus it would have made sense for the installed programs to not be included (what seems not to be true as stated).
Yes, the file exclusions relate to file/folder backup jobs, and have no relation to the image side of things…
With regards to the space consumption…can be a little more interesting to explain; there are certain file types and locations that are automagically excluded (for example, *.pst files) and therefore save server-side storage space…
The backup process will also find duplicated files [presuming based on more than simply the name of the file, but probably the file’s “hash” value] and just retain one copy, and use a symlink for any additional instances…again, this saves space on the server, but if one of the files is updated [but not the others] then the file hash will be different and then backed up again…
Not sure exactly how that is done, but I guess that the original symlinked version/s will retain the version history on the “per file” basis in the event you need to recover it…
You can use the Logs tab of the server to review the summary of the backup jobs, though it does default to errors or warnings, so you might need to change it to show all jobs - this can also be filtered by client…
