Constant reindexing on the client

W10 (2.5.23) client with file backup setup for the whole drive.
Server is 2.5.31

Everytime file backup is executed (including incremental onces), full reindexing on the client is happening which takes a lot of time and pins client with disk load. This didn’t happen before to the same client. Issue appeared without any changes to components of Urbackup. Perhaps something was updated on a Windows side: hard to tell.

Backups are created normally and no issues with them. Just the constant reindexing is the issue.

Anything I can do to fix it? Thank you.

Found more reliable steps to reproduce:

  1. On a Windows 10 client setup file backup of a non-system disk.
  2. Perform full file backup.
  3. Perform incremental file backup.
  4. Unclean restart Windows host (for example, by pressing reset at the desktop). It seems that the same behavior is observed in case when host has normally restarted, but this is still to be confirmed.
  5. Perform incremental file backup.

Expected behavior:
CBT tracks and backup is performed files that has changed

Actual behavior:
Backup process starts (Indexing phase is short), but according to length of backup file and statistics from SMART and Windows - whole disk is re-read completely.

Stopping backup on a server side, pressing Pause on the client doesn’t stop this operation.

Should this backup succeed, following incremental backup will be fast as expected.

Is this the same issue? Error code

ERROR_JOURNAL_NOT_ACTIVE 1179 (0x49B) The volume change journal is not active.

So basically the change journal was not active in OP. It tries to enable it, but maybe that did not work. Maybe try to enable the change journal yourself and see if it outputs any errors?

For the CBT issue: Per default CBT is not crash persistent. So an unclean shutdown causes CBT to turn off for the next backup.

You can set List of volumes for which the change block tracking should be crash persistent in the advanced settings to e.g. ALL (see CBT manual) to change this. This comes at a small performance cost to writes on the volumes it is enabled on.

Probably sequence of events is the following:

  1. File backup starts. No VSC present.
  2. VSC 1 is created. Full disk rescan is performed.
  3. Backup of changed files performed. I can see on the server side, that hashes are compared, only changed files are patched.
  4. Backup is complete.
  5. New backup starts. VSC 2 is created.
  6. VSC 1 < - > VSC 2 is compared, only new files are uploaded.
  7. VSC 1 might get deleted either to reclaim space, by fsck or due to crash.
  8. No previous snapshot is available for tracking changes.

Could this lead to a full disk rescan to confirm hashes in Urbackup DB?
