Client cannot find server when using 5ghz wireless

I’ve an interesting problem, when my laptop uses the 5ghz wireless band, it cannot find the server to perform a backup. It can find file shares, the web server, streaming media, etc., but not the UrBackup server. When using an Ethernet connection, it can find it, when using the 2.4ghz wireless band it can find it. I’ve tried two different wireless ac adapters, when connected via 2.4ghz access point, it can find the server, when using the 5ghz band on the same router, it can’t.

Logically, one would assume there is something wonky with the 5ghz network setup on the router. I checked but was unable to find anything out of the ordinary.

Hi Twerthi,

is it possible, that 2,4GHz Wifi is another one than 5GHz with an Firewall behind?

Also you might want to check which firewall profile you are under when attached to 5ghz (Private/Public/Domain). This only applies if your computer is Windows based of course.

The 2.4 and 5ghz WiFi is on the same Negear Nighthawk router, I didn’t see that they had different firewalls when in the admin console.

Interesting, I could check that. I am on a windows machine, would the firewall react different based solely on the Network attached to? Perhaps when I originally joined the network and it asked if it was a Home, Work, or Public network I chose the wrong one?

Yeah. Sometimes if you connect to the same network the interface will name it Network2 or something and change the firewall profile to Public.

Good call, that was it! Somehow when I joined the network with that adapter it got set to Public.

You could also have ticked “rate every other network as public”…it’s some kind of interesting windows features i can’t understand…

A decade of systems engineering and I finally got something right! lol
