Big Gaps - Am I missing something?

New to Urbackup and have a few basic questions that have me perplexed… I realize this is FREE software so I’m not trying to gripe, just understand really what I’m dealing with here. I’ve installed the product and started using it.

  1. Device-specific settings: Is there no way to specify differfent settings for different client devices?? I mean, say on one server you don’t want to backup drive E: but on another you do. Is that possible? Is there no way to have different incremental settings for each device?

  2. How do you see what is in the backup? I’m not talking restoring anything, I would just like to see even just a list of drive letters that were included in an image.

  3. Restore documentation and features: There is no practical documentation really on how to perform restores for a few common situations. It basically says to mount a VHD. How would you grab only certain files or folders from an image, stored on a Linux server that need to be restored to a Windows server? No info? I don’t see a restore function in the client software. Seems you would have to do some complicated stuff like mount an NFS share to gain access to the Linux server files - but can you even mount a VHD via an NFS share?

Then I saw this announcement just released regarding 1.4.9 “Fixed bug where garbage was appended to the end of a decompressed VHDZ file. This causes this file to become unmountable e.g. with the VHD mounting integrated in Windows” - Geez, I could have seen myself beating my head against a wall over this!

  1. For setting device-specific settings there are two different ways to do it. From the UrBackup server you go to the settings tab. Then you should see a drop down menu that says clients. When you click on the clients drop down it will allow you to navigate to the different client devices and set device-specific settings such as what directories to backup and how many backups to store. You can also add file directories to be backed up from the client by right clicking on the client and selecting Add/Remove backup paths.

  2. If you are only looking for file backups then you can see those in the Urbackup storage folder. These backups can be navigated by a normal file explorer. The image backups would need to be mounted to enable you to see their contents.

  3. The image backups at this point seem to be primarily meant for restoring a complete computer in the case of a hardware failure. In order to restore an image to a hard drive there is a linux recovery disk. If you are merely wanting to extract files from an image backup and you have backed them up as a VHD you should be able to copy the VHD file to a Windows machine then attach the VHD through Disk Management and move the files. If they are compressed then you will need to first decompress the image. Processes for dealing with VHD backup files are dealt with in 9.4-9.6 in the manual.

Thank you so much! The interface takes a little getting used to.
