Thanks for getting back to me, I followed the link but this does not seem to be the problem. I tried changing the priority of the processors both on the server and client machine but no change. Although the server has been powered off and on several times the client is a mail server so always on. But over the holiday it was restarted to enable some Microsoft updates and hey presto the 1 GB of data then backed up in 16 minutes. I’ll do more investigation to see if I can find a reason why a restart was needed.
