Backup Fails - have no idea why

I’ve been struggling to get a backup going of a client machine that happens to be the same Ubuntu machine as the urbackup server runs on. I have successfully backed up Windows clients (I think) but no matter what I try I cannot get the Ubuntu backup to go. Log message (client) is “Request of image backup failed. Reason: Opening filesystem on device failed. Stopping.” I know that image backups of Linux systems aren’t supported so the message about image backup may be clue. But, I have disabled the image backups (checkmarks on Image backup setup page). So if the server is trying to do image backups, I have no idea why as I’m requesting Full File Backup. Whatever it is happens quick because I get the backup failed immediately after request. The specified file location is set to ALL. I’d really appreciate some guidance because I’ve been working on this on and off all day and I really need a backup. Thanks in advance.

Don’t know if this is any help but here’s excerpt from last entries in urbackup.log:

Don’t know if these are for the client I’m trying to backup or others. Also how do I reset the time before another backup is attempted? Didn’t know that each one raised the time to next. I’d like to learn why failure before trying another in a week only to watch it fail to. Also don’t know about reference to image backup. Makes me think these entries are for windows machine that I’ve wanted to get image backup. So maybe these aren’t relevant to the client (Ubuntu) that I really want only a file backup.

Wow, am I confused…

Continuing to stumble around in absence of any other suggestions, I reconfigured/installed local Ubuntu client thinking that perhaps that kinga reset back to the beginning might give me a fresh start. I did not change snything on server. Here are messages I get when I invoke client:

Confgure was done with no internet client.

I’d really appreciate some guidance.

Sorry if that is not made clear, but the Linux client doesn’t support image backups. There is no standard way to backup images on Linux while the system is running.

Ok. I just about figured that out. Now all I need is a backup of all the files on ubuntu machine (same as urbackup server). Can’t even get that to work. Will send more info after another attempt. Thanks.

Hi,

I just install the product today and after compiling the linux client on Debian I get these errors :

sudo start_urbackup_client --loglevel info --no_daemon

Any idea why ?
Thanks,
Eric

Well i got exactly the same error messages when starting the client.
I compiled the source code without any errors on mint 17.
Even starting the gui frontend does nothing, except producing a large gap in systray area.

So what is wrong here?

I managed to setup a server in a virtual machine. working fine so far.
On the client I killed all client processes regarding urbackup_client and urbackup_client_gui.
After that I started the backup_client and he found the server.
But the gui does not start anyway. But it seems that I need the gui to set up the pathes for backup.
Because the server informs me to:

Constructing of filelist of “chris-mint” failed: no backup dirs. Please
add paths to backup on the client (via tray icon) or configure default
paths to backup.

But there is no tray icon on cinnamon.

Is there a simple config file for the backup_client, where i can manually edit the pathes and files to backup?

Those you can set on the web interface – See the admin manual.
