Hey Uroni! Thanks for making an awesome product!

Iā€™ve been having some trouble getting incremental image backups working on 2.x. I had no troubles with the 1.4.x, but nothing I do with 2.x seems to work. Here are the details:

Server: 2.0.7 on Debian 8.3 (.deb install), fresh install, not upgraded
Client: 2.0.6 on Windows 7 VM for testing (fully updated, VMware Tools installed), no other software installed

Symptoms (reproducible):

  • Full/Incremental file backups - [OK]
  • First full image backup - [OK]
  • Next full or image backup - [client debug.log: Pipe to client unexpectedly closed has_error=true]

Things Iā€™ve tried:

  • 1.4.11 client on Windows 7 VM [no improvement]

Let me know if thereā€™s anything else I can try.

Greg try Opening a command windows on the Windows 7 VM and type ā€œVSSADMIN List Writersā€ this will give you the status of the vss snapshot services on the window 7 \vm. Also try restarting the urbackup clinet service.

Could you upload/send me the hash file of the full image backup it is basing the incremental backup on?
Would be e.g. Image_C_160327-2201.raw.hash.

Since upgrading to the latest beta I have not been able to complete any backups. My office desktop that backs up over the LAN is failing with errors such as:

Could you have a look at the debug log to see what it is doing in the extra hour? Perhaps the live log will also show some extra info during the backup.

@john3354 The first one looks like the backup up is missing? The second one could be an error Iā€™ve been trying to track. Iā€™ll try to reproduce that and if I canā€™t come back to your offer. Thanks!

I told the server to do a full file backup. We will see if that helps. No idea why it would say the backup is missing? That error only started after I upgraded to the latest beta.

As for the second, if there is anyway that I can help just let me know. I will get you whatever information that you need.

I have installed 2.0.6 client on my Windows 10 laptop, installed with default settings.
Now I get this error in mail:
ERROR: Client calculated hash of ā€œ/media/backup/urbackup//BornData - SƃĀøren Yoga 13/160330-0951/C/swapfile.sysā€ differs from server calculated hash. This may be caused by a bug or by random bit flips on the client or server hard disk. Failing backup.
ERROR: FATAL: Backup failed because of disk problems

The page file should automatically be excluded. Could you have a look if it is listed in the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\ExistingPagefiles ?

Edit: Ok, it is a new pagefile for Windows 10 Universal appsā€¦ Now I have to find a registry key for that oneā€¦

Did you receive the hash file I sent via email?

Can anyone else confirm if they have successfully completed incremental image backups using copy-on-write/btrfs snapshots? Iā€™m also backing up over the internet if that makes any difference.

Testing EFI/GPT restores

Urbackup 2.0.8 Server, Debian 8 with btrfs formatted storage ( no compression ). Intel Core 2 Quad with 4GB RAM.
Urbackup 2.0.6 Client, Windows 10 Pro.

Installed Windows 10 on an Intel NUC, with EFI enabled in the BIOS. Created a full image of the NUC.

Restored the NUC image onto a VirtualBox VM with EFI support enabled. Chose install onto dissimilar hardware option. Worked perfectly.

Restored the NUC image onto an AMD based M/B. Chose install onto dissimilar hardware option. On first boot Windows diagnosed the install then after a restart booted to the desktop. I then scanned for new drivers in device manager and Windows 10 downloaded drivers off the Internet. Worked perfectly.

Determined to break UrBackup, I did the same with another, different chipset, AMD based M/B. Same result. Worked perfectly.

The restore speed was around 6 minutes for the 15 GB image on my gigabit network and Iā€™m not using SSD drives.

Combined with the ability to do synthetic incremental images with btrfs, simply awesome.
