Unable to Backup VHD files?

Not sure if i’m going about this the wrong way.
Instead of running the client on the Virtual servers i’m trying to run it on the host.
However the back-up is failing:

Error on client occurred: Error while reading from shadow copy device (1). Incorrect function.

Backup failed

-Server Log-

Do you guys normally backup the entire Hyper-V server or just just certain files and then backup the virtual machines individually?
Running Freenas Urbackup Server 2.2.8 and Windows Server 2012R2 client 2.2.5

There is a urbackup commercial hyper-v client here: https://www.urbackup.org/commercial.html

Alternatively, you can do what you said and backup the entire host system image or just file backups. The hyper-v client makes it easier to restore individual VMs. I haven’t used the hyper-v client yet, but will be trying it out soon.
